We were jolted to wakefulness by the blaring sirens and flashing lights of our Retard-o-tron™. The blinking letters on the wall said WorldNetDaily. As you know, WorldNetDaily (WND) is the flamingly creationist, absolutely execrable, moronic, and incurably crazed journalistic organ that believes in and enthusiastically promotes every conspiracy theory that ever existed. WND was an early winner of the Curmudgeon’s Buffoon Award, thus that jolly logo displayed above this post.
So we visited the WND website and were directed to an article titled Is your church having a ‘Cinderella Sunday’. Curious, we looked at the lead paragraph, which says:
The author of a new book that shows how America is buying into Adolf Hitler’s belief system that there are human beings who actually are less than human is telling churches that are celebrating “Evolution Weekend” to go the rest of the way and also have a “Cinderella Sunday.”
We’re aware that this is Evolution Weekend, an event sponsored by the Clergy Letter Project. They have a page about it here: 2012 Evolution Weekend. Wikipedia even discusses it: Evolution Weekend and related activities. But where does Hitler fit in? And Cinderella? We had to check it out. Here are some excerpts, with bold font added by us:
“The only thing scientific about the theory of evolution is that it is science fiction,” said Ray Comfort, author of the new “Hitler, God, and the Bible.”
Ray Comfort? Aaaargh!! We just wrote about him and his book here: WND: Darwin, Hitler, Ray Comfort, & More. Now WND is consulting him on Evolution Weekend? Maybe next they’ll consult Count Dracula on the meaning of Valentine’s Day. Let’s read on:
Comfort notes that there are a few holes in the theory, and that perhaps “churches that are celebrating ‘Evolution Sunday’ this weekend … consider having other fairytale celebrations.”
Okay, we get it — that’s the “Cinderella” connection. Clever guy, Comfort. WND continues:
He said when believers of evolution are pressed for evidence, “They can’t find any except bacteria ‘evolving’ into bacteria, and other ‘evidence’ that has to be received by blind faith.”
“All you have to do is ask them about the First Cause, where male and female came from, whether the first fish that came up out of the water (they believe we came from the oceans) had lungs or gills, and you will begin to get blank looks,” Comfort said.
Those blank looks are because after hearing such questions, people realize they’re in the presence of a madman. Here’s more:
“The institutions that embrace the theory of evolution need to come out of the closet and stop pretending to be Christian. Either we believe Jesus when He said, ‘In the beginning God created male and female’ or we don’t. Biblical truth and the fairytale of evolution are incompatible,” Comfort said.
The closet? Hey, that reminds us — when discussing Ray Comfort we always need a link to Ray Comfort’s famous “Banana video” featuring Comfort and Kirk Cameron, the boy wonder. Watching that classic has become an Evolution Weekend tradition around here, along with reading WND by the light of the Retard-o-tron™.
That’s how your Curmudgeon celebrates Evolution Weekend. Let’s hear how you do it.

Of course, the “first fish coming out of the water” had both lungs *and* gills, just like present day lungfish (which also have male and female sexes, as indeed do all vertebrates).
The earliest tetrapods (Acanthostega and Ichthyostega) also had gills (here we have hard evidence from fossilized gill bars), and evidence of gills bars and gills in the adults is also known from many later tetrapods in the Carboniferous.
Ah, that old standby — the “They’re not TRVE Christians, but we are!” argument. Those “not TRVE Christians” are only counted as “Christians” when citing statistics about how 80-85% of the US is “Christian”.
I wonder what percentage of the US population are TRVE Christians? Who gets to decide who is and who is not a TRVE Christian?
Such sectarian conflicts, disagreements, and religious bigotry are one of the reasons why, in their wisdom, the Founding Fathers wanted a secular government that did not favor one sect or faith over another. This is precisely why creationism does not belong in public schools. Those who wish to preach that they are TRVE Christians and others are not can do it elsewhere.
Richard Dawkins said it beautifully: ” And referring to U.S.-based evangelist Ray Comfort, who argues that the universe and life is the result of an intelligent creator, Dawkins said: “There is no refutation of Darwinian evolution in existence. If a refutation ever were to come about, it would come from a scientist, and not an idiot.”
“Hunches aren’t interesting, hunches aren’t valuable. What’s important is scientific evidence. It doesn’t matter what mister whatever his name is, Comfort … what his opinion is. It doesn’t matter what my opinion is. What matters is evidence. And the evidence is clear. The evidence is in favor of evolution.”
@Christine Janis
Several species of whiptail lizards have only females.
Hitler, the Roman Catholic chancellor of Germany maintained excellent relations with the Vatican until late in the war (WW2 for you younger folks). Hitler’s views, and thus the official position of the German State on ‘right to life’ issues such as artificial birth control and abortion were very much in line with modern Catholic Church doctrine. His army wore the motto “Gott Mit Uns” on their belt buckles. One can buy these items on e-bay or at any gun show. In his writing and speeches Hitler repeatedly spoke of his Christian faith. I can only conclude Hitler was a sincere and faithful Christian.
“We’re aware that this is Evolution Weekend, an event sponsored by the Clergy Letter Project.”
“The Clergy Letter Project is an endeavor designed to demonstrate that religion and science can be compatible and to elevate the quality of the debate of this issue.”
Science is compatible with the magical fantasies of religious idiots? I don’t think so. These clergy don’t really accept evolution. They pollute evolution with their dead Jeebus.
Human Ape says: “They pollute evolution with their dead Jeebus.”
We don’t talk that way here. Try to restrain yourself.
Jack Hogan: “Who gets to decide who is and who is not a TRVE Christian?”
Ray Martinez of course.
What I’d like to know is what the other Ray (Comfort) thinks of the Discoveroids. At least Ray Martinez considers them “evolutionists” and not TRVE Christians.
@Christine Janis and @TomS:
Gender in the natural world is more complicated than the he/she creation story. For example many turtles to not posses a specific chromosome for gender. Instead, the gender is determined by the temperature at which the turtle egg is incubated.
In birds, the gender of the offspring is determined by the chromosome donated by the female, rather than the male, which in birds carries two copies of the male chromosome.
Just goes to show there is some evolutionarily adaptive bias toward sexual reproduction in animals, which can’t be explained by biblical scriptures which strictly equate mere gender with specific rules for the societal expectations of male and female roles.
