Creationist Wisdom #288: Religious Dogma

Today’s letter-to-the-editor appears in the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin of Walla Walla, Washington. It’s titled Counterpoint to evolution theory needed. We’ll give you a few excerpts, enhanced with our Curmudgeonly commentary, and some bold font for emphasis. As we usually do, we’ll omit the writer’s name and city. Okay, here we go:

So, evolutionary theory is getting better with age? Only if your fundamentalist faith in Darwinism takes precedence over scientific facts.

That’s a reference to this earlier letter: Evolutionary theory grows stronger with age. Today’s letter-writer didn’t like it, as you will see:

A scientist who rejects Dobzhansky’s maxim (nothing makes sense in biology except in the light of evolution) is a far better scientist than the one who accepts it uncritically. Natural science is based on factual evidence. Those who start with a preconceived paradigm and distort the factual evidence to support it are not pursuing science.

Ah yes, unlike creationism, evolution is a “preconceived paradigm” that “distorts the factual evidence.” Let’s read on:

The Bible exhorts us to “Study to show thyself, approved.” Educate yourself by reading some excellent books from evolutionary scientists on the insufficiency of evolutionary theory before accepting Steve Luckstead’s religious dogma [he’s the earlier letter-writer].

Excellent books? You’ll be happy to know that he gives us some recommendations:

I suggest “Icons of Evolution” by Jonathan Wells, Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology; “Darwin’s Black Box” by Michael Behe, Ph.D. in biochemistry; “Origins: A Skeptics Guide to the Creation of Life” by Robert Shapiro, Ph.D. in chemistry; and “Evolution, A Theory in Crisis” by Michael Denton, M.D.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! The letter continues:

Malcolm Muggeridge opined, “I believe evolution will be viewed as one of the greatest hoaxes of the 20th century. Posterity will marvel that so many were deluded by a theory that had so little evidence or facts to support it.”

Malcolm Muggeridge? That’s the first time we’ve seen him quoted as a science authority. Skipping some scripture, we come to this:

What is evolution? It is an illegally tax-funded state religion that is allowed to openly proselytized in our public schools and whose disciples exert a totalitarian authority to deny any voice but their own in matters of science.

Wow! Here’s the last paragraph:

If the U-B [the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin] actually had a legitimate interest in educating its readership in science, it would provide a counterpoint column to respond to the fundamentalist evolutionary religious dogma Steve Luckstead preaches in his column.

Strong words. A most impressive letter!

  1. Is it opposite day again?

  2. anevilmeme asked:

    Is it opposite day again?

Maybe. Yeah know, one of the signs of The End Times, which is now only three days away, is the flipping of the magnetic poles. So it could be “opposite day”.

  3. Muggeridge was the fool who made Mother Dearest Teresa a heroine instead of the cold-hearted scumbag she was; she took delight in others’ pain as God loving them! To jerks!

  4. The author of this fascinating letter, Guillermo F. Garcia, sounds suspiciously like one Guillermo Gonzalez from the Dishonesty Institute, who was canned from Iowa State. Or maybe they’re related since he’s toeing the DI/ID line to the hilt.

  5. Garcia. The asteroid? La carpenteria madera. Or simply ,,El Guapo:)

  6. That was good for a chuckle. So is this tour of everyones favorite museum: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2007/11/12/your-creation-museum-report/

I smile everytime I see the name Walla Walla.

Muggeridge also said this: The orgasm has replaced the cross as the focus of longing and fulfillment.

Walla Walla University is a Seventh Day Adventists school.

  8. Did a quick search and found a complaint against a Mr Guillermo Garcia of College Place WA. for “Unauthorized Practice of Law”. from 2008. I wonder if it’s the same guy.

  9. The quality of creationist research is evident yet again. The “Origins of Life” book cited is skeptical of the “RNA world” hypothesis, but strongly promotes the “metabolism first” hypothesis, that life arose from the self-sustaining and compartmentalized reaction of simple molecules, which then reproduced and evolved.

Somebody didn’t read past the book’s title.

  10. “Walla Walla University is a Seventh Day Adventists school.”

“Creation science” — the concept that the stories in the Bible can be proven with actual evidence started with the SDAs and William Morris picked up on it.

  11. George McReady Price, 7th day Adventist, pretty much invented the version of flood geology that Henry Morris adopted in his book, “The Genesis Flood, ” without attribution, I believe.
