THIS is a brief note about some weekend reading (and listening) available at the excellent website of Dr. Barbara Forrest, a star witness for the winning side in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District.
At the website Louisiana Coalition for Science, from which Barbara patiently argues against the mindless descent of her state into the wretched sinkhole of creationism, there’s a new article about some old — but very informative — events.
We invite you to check out New Mexicans for Science and Reason: “What Hath Jindal Done?” Barbara says:
New Mexicans for Science and Reason (NMSR) is one of the most dedicated, effective pro-science groups in the United States. Since 1996, they have successfully defended the teaching of evolution in New Mexico public schools against the Religious Right’s repeated attacks. Two NMSR members, physicists David Thomas and Kim Johnson, also do a weekly radio program, Science Watch, which airs each Saturday afternoon on KABQ AM 1350 Progressive Talk in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Concerned about the attack on science education in Louisiana by the Discovery Institute and the Louisiana Family Forum, Science Watch has done two interviews with Barbara Forrest about Gov. Bobby Jindal’s signing the 2008 Louisiana Science Education Act (LSEA).
She also says:
These interviews are posted so that Louisiana citizens will know that what has happened here has captured the attention of our fellow citizens around the country.
What happened in Louisiana has consequences far beyond the borders of that unfortunate state. It’s the creationists’ pilot program for the universal triumph of stupid. There is much to be learned from Louisiana’s tragedy, and if the lessons are understood, the irony will be that the creationists will have succeed in improving science education — but not in the way they intend.
Visit Barbara’s site, click on the links, and listen to the interviews. It’ll be time well spent.
