Don McLeroy Sings: “We’re in the Bunker!”

Don McLeroy, the creationist dentist, who was disgraced when his appointment as chairman of the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) was rejected by the Texas Senate, and whose bid for re-election was then defeated by Thomas Ratliff in the GOP primary, remains in office for the rest of this year.

But this week is the climax of McLeroy’s creationist-theocratic career. The SBOE has a public meeting scheduled for 19 May — that’s tomorrow! — to discuss his faction’s theocratic revisions to the state’s standards for history education. A final vote will be held two days later.

McLeroy and his fellow creationist-theocrats who still dominate the Board are about to do a “Samson” and take down the temple. They intend to totally demolish public education in Texas. This is, for Don McLeroy & Cynthia Dunbar: The Last Hurrah. Tomorrow’s meeting will feature An Ark-Load of Absurdity.

They’re in the bunker. They know it, and they intend to leave nothing but rubble when they’re gone. If you sympathize with their situation, then join them in a bit of rousing song. First we’ll give you the original lyrics:

We’re in the money, we’re in the money;
We’ve got a lot of what it takes to get along!
We’re in the money, that sky is sunny,
Old Man Depression you are through, you done us wrong.

Here’s McLeroy’s version. Come on, everybody — sing along with Don!

We’re in the bunker, that’s where we’re hunkered;
We’ve got a lot of what it takes to get along!
We’ve got the power, this is the hour,
Old Constitution, you are through, you done us wrong!
