Darwin’s birthday is 12 February — less than three weeks from today. It was a really big deal back in 2009 because that was the 200th anniversary of his birthday (and Abe Lincoln’s too). That’s when we posted 12 February: Charles Darwin’s 200th Birthday. Last year the date sort of slipped by unnoticed, but this year everyone seems to be gearing up for another celebration.
At the website of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) they’ve posted Darwin Day approaches, which says:
It’s time to dust off your Darwin costume again: less than a month remains before Darwin Day 2011! Colleges and universities, schools, libraries, museums, churches, civic groups, and just plain folks across the country — and the world — are preparing to celebrate Darwin Day, on or around February 12, in honor of the life and work of Charles Darwin.
NCSE also provides a link to the Darwin Day Celebration website where scheduled events are listed and more can be registered.
They’re also posting about Darwin Day at Panda’s Thumb: Darwin Week. Wow — a whole week!
The only way we can get ahead of everyone is to invoke our inherent authority and declare that February is Curmudgeon Month. There’s no better reason to celebrate, so get out there and do it.
