Louisiana Creationism Repeal Bill Filed

This is the best news out of Louisiana since 2008 when that state became the only one in the US to pass an anti-science, anti-evolution, pro-creationism “Academic Freedom” law modeled after the Academic Freedom Act promoted by the neo-theocrats at the Discovery Institute‘s creationist public relations and lobbying operation, the Center for Science and Culture (a/k/a the Discoveroids, a/k/a the cdesign proponentsists).

That infamous piece of legislation is the Louisiana Science Education Act (the “LSEA”). We call it the “Every Child an Idiot” law. The legislature passed it almost unanimously. The bill was promoted by the Louisiana Family Forum, run by Rev. Gene Mills, and it was signed by the state’s ambition-crazed governor, Bobby Jindal, the Exorcist.

A couple of months ago we bold you about Zachary Kopplin’s Campaign to Repeal Louisiana’s Creationism Law. This is Zack’s website devoted to the repeal effort.

Just posted at Zack’s website is this news item: Legislation Filed to Repeal Louisiana’s Creationism Law. Zack says, with bold font was added by us:

On Friday, April 15th, Senator Karen Carter Peterson introduced SB 70, which would repeal the misnamed and misguided Louisiana Science Education Act (LSEA), Louisiana’s creationism law. Enacted in 2008, the LSEA is stealth legislation that allows the unconstitutional and unscientific teaching of creationism into public school science classrooms.

Here’s a link to information about the bill: SB70 – 2011 Regular Session, from which you can click here for the bill’s text. It’s a 2-page pdf file. The operative part of it is short and sweet:

Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: Section 1. R.S. 17:285.1 is hereby repealed.

In everyday language, that would repeal the LSEA — if Peterson’s bill becomes law, that is.

This is Senator Peterson’s page at the Louisiana legislature’s website. There’s more about this at Zack’s website, so click over there and take a look.

And Barbara Forrest has just posted an informative press release at her blog: Louisiana Coalition for Science supports SB. It concludes with this:

Concerned citizens must call Senate Education Committee members and their respective House and Senate representatives and ask them to vote in favor of SB 70.

It’s going to be fun watching the backlash.

  1. Go, Zack, go!

  2. Great! May not have much of a chance, but we all hope it works. LA citizens should send messages to legislators supporting the bill. In Oklahoma we have learned that NUMBERS DO COUNT in this regard. Messages should not only go to a person’s legislators, but also to all members of the committee hearing the bill. Legislators may not read all their messages, but they do get tallied by their staffs. Legislators actually get very few messages on bills and when there are a large number, they do pay attention. I know of several cases where law makers have changed their votes due to as few as 3 to 5 messages opposing a bill! Hopefully, pro-evolution voters in LA will not only send messages, but will mobilize their friends and colleagues to do the same.

If the Louisiana legislature votes according to their knowledge of the subject, I fear that Peterson will be the only one who votes for repeal — but it has to get out of committee first. As you say, it’s only input from voters that can cause them to support this bill.

  4. Great news! Congrats to Zack, your hard work and dedication are paying off! Sure hope it works.

  5. well done that lad!!!!

Hats off all round and a 21 gun salute.

Now lets watch the immoral scum, sorry politicians, squirm and wiggle like the maggots they are.
