WorldNetDaily: Garbage on Sale!

Buffoon Award

The blaring sirens and flashing lights of our Retard-o-tron™ got our attention, and the blinking letters of the wall display said WorldNetDaily. They’re described in the Cast of Characters section of our Intro page. WND was an early winner of the Curmudgeon’s Buffoon Award, thus that jolly logo displayed above this post.

Dashing to the computer, we found it linked to this: Stunning Darwin-led-to-Hitler video – $4.95 today only! Everyone loves a bargain, so we took a look. Here are some excerpts, with bold font added by us:

A powerful and critically acclaimed video documentary on Darwinism – which proves the evolutionary theory’s founder should share with Adolph Hitler the blame for the Holocaust, as well as for the more than 45 million American lives lost to abortion – is available today for just $4.95, a $20 discount from the normal $25.00 price, but only from WND.

Wow — it’s a critically acclaimed documentary. What else does WND tell us? Here it comes:

Titled “Darwin’s Deadly Legacy,” the stunning documentary shows that Darwinian theory, “which is scientifically bankrupt, has probably been responsible for more bloodshed than anything else in the history of humanity,” said Jerry Newcomb, one of the program’s two co-producers.

Darwin’s Deadly Legacy? We’ve written about that before. Yeah — a year ago WND was hawking the same thing at the same price. See WorldNetDaily, Darwin, and Hitler. It’s based on a book by Richard Weikart titled From Darwin to Hitler. Weikart is not only a Discoveroid “fellow” (i.e., full-blown creationist), his book influenced James Kennedy — the now-deceased televangelist who made Darwin’s Deadly Legacy.

Let’s read on, to see if WND says anything we haven’t previously seen:

The program also addresses eugenics, a term coined by Darwin’s own cousin, Francis Galton, who campaigned for using human genetics as a means to breed superior beings. “We talk about the link between Darwin and Hitler, and in the middle ground, eugenics,” said Newcomb. “Darwin led to eugenics, which led directly to Hitler.”

Right, it’s Darwin’s fault — except that the Spartans were practicing eugenics 25 centuries earlier. See the Birth and death section of the Wikipedia article on Sparta. We continue:

The culmination of that belief system appears to have been the Columbine massacre. There, students Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 other students, a teacher and themselves, after setting out on a plan to kill 500.

“Harris wrote on his website, ‘YOU KNOW WHAT I LOVE??? Natural SELECTION! It’s the best thing that ever happened to the Earth. Getting rid of all the stupid and weak organisms,’” the documentary reports. Reports show that on the day of the attack, Harris wore a T-shirt with the words, “Natural Selection.”

The ravings of a maniac are offered as rock solid proof! But that’s not all:

All this happened, said Kennedy, because of a set of theories based on “a crumbling scientific foundation.”

Yes, it’s crumbling. Hey — if WND is using the utterances of lunatics as persuasive material, we have a quote for them:

For it was by the Will of God that men were made of a certain bodily shape, were given their natures and their faculties. Whoever destroys His work wages war against God’s Creation and God’s Will. — Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf

WND wraps it up with this:

Save $20, get ‘Darwin’s Deadly Legacy’ for only $4.95! That’s right. Your eyes are not deceiving you. Right now, you can buy “Darwin’s Deadly Legacy,” normally $25.00, for one-fifth of the cover price!

Well, dear reader, what are you waiting for? This is your big chance to load up on a garbage documentary. Don’t miss out! But if you do, don’t worry about it — WND will probably be selling the same thing for the same price next year.

  1. Of course we understand already that when some teenage sociopath with a hatred of the world and an arsenal of weapons praises “natural selection,” he’s really using the idea as an excuse to engage in a little “artificial selection,” which is not what Darwin was talking about.

It’s like taking the fact of our inevitable death as an excuse to go commit murder.

  2. I’m sure no one here would bother a purchase, but what gets me about offers like that is that it includes 3 free copies of their whistleblower mag which you must then email or phone to cancel it or you are charged around $40 for an annual subscription. I guess they figure they are just fleecing the flock, hey it’s natural selection.

  3. This must be where Klinghoffer gets his Hitler material.

  4. And once again I link to Nazi Racial Ideology was Creationist, Religious and Opposed to Darwinism.

I would like to point out how creationists use the word “directly” when they claim Darwinism led “directly” to Hitler. What they do is, Step One, they first assert that Darwinism led “directly” to Hitler with a bunch of fake quotes and cherry-picked data, unreliable sources, etc.

When you challenge their fake evidence, they pull the switcharoo, and say, ‘Wha-? I never said Darwin led directly to Hitler!’

So Dead Kennedy’s movie is based on Weikart’s book From Darwin to Hitler. Based on that book, Jerry Newcombe (who really is quite the liar, I’ve read his stuff), says, “Darwin led to eugenics, which led directly to Hitler.”

Direct. Got it? “Direct”, and based on Weikart’s book.

Now blogger Larry Arnhart, aka The Darwinian Conservative, trashed Weikart’s book, claiming that there was no direct link from Darwin to Hitler.

So Weikart lost it. He lost what marbles he had, and wrote a long screed accusing Arnhart of lying [“Response to Larry Arnhart’s Misinterpretation of From Darwin to Hitler. By Richard Weikart. Undated; I think June 8, 2005.] You should read it– his main charge is that Arnhart is a damn dirty liar because Arnhart said that Weikart said Darwin led “directly” to Hitler, and of course Weikart never said he’d proved that!

This is a horrible thing for Arnhart to say! Weikart, furious, wants to chew Arnhart’s face off for saying something so horrible as to claim that Weikart said he’d proved that Darwin led “directly” to Hitler!

Yet Dead Kennedy’s film Darwin’s Deadly Legacy is based on Weikart’s book, and Weikart appears in the film to lie through his teeth.

In ads for that film, Newcombe, Weikart’s collaborator and co-worker can say “Darwin led to eugenics, which led directly to Hitler,” and Weikart response is basically, “When can we work together again, my Christian brother?”

Of course, you know what happens next. Shortly thereafter, the DI hierophant Jonathan Witt (the evil one; there is also a good Jonathan Witt) wrote an article at ENV called, what else, “From Darwin to Hitler: A Straightforward Path to Horror.” Witt wrote, what else,

“What is striking is how straightforwardly many of the horrors documented in Weikart’s book follow from Darwinian principles.” [“From Darwin to Hitler: A Straightforward Path to Horror”, by Jonathan Witt (the evil one), ENV, 2006]

Arnhart noticed this and roasted Weikart for his hypocrisy. That was fun.

A couple years later, Ben Stein was pushing his own Darwin-direct-to-Hitler movie, Expelled, where once again Weikart appears on camera to lie through his teeth.

Ben Stein, Weikart’s co-worker, again got Weikart’s message straight: Darwin led directly to Hitler.

Ben Stein: “…the idea that lightning striking a mud puddle could create something as complex as the cell, struck me as so far-fetched that it deserved to be questioned. …Third… the idea that Darwinism was a neutral force and didn’t have any moral implications, struck me as extremely problematical, because we know that Darwinism led – in a pretty much straight line – to Nazism and the Holocaust—the idea [of] the survival of the fittest, and the extermination of those who are considered inferior races.” [Ben Stein, interviewed by Paul Lauer at “Expelled is About… What?”, Hollywood Jesus, [Feb?] 2008]

(The interviewer asks Stein to back that up with evidence, but he never does. Again, Stein has learned from Weikart.)

Creationist Ken Ham picked up on that and approvingly quoted Ben Stein about “direct.”

Ken Ham: “There is one thing [Ben] Stein says that shouldn’t be overlooked in evolution controversies. ‘Darwinism led—in a pretty much straight line—to Nazism and the Holocaust.'”

[“Stein is Right: Darwinism Led to the Holocaust.” Ken Ham. Religion Today, April 16, 2008]

A year later, David Klinghitler, the DI Minister of Propaganda, wrote an article at BeliefNet again blaming Darwin for the crimes of Christendom, but also they don’t need no stinkin’ evidence to prove it with, because the connection is not direct.

But commenter “John” receives the correct message:

John: “Hitler… was a neo-pagan or atheist as it suited his purpose. …The link between Darwin and Hitler is direct… Darwin was the single most important intellectual progenitor of the Holocaust, more important than any ethnic German except Hitler and his thugs in prompting mass murder. Darwin’s writings also led to of Stalin’s mass murders of stubborn resisters as classes… This is a fact.”
[“John”, commenting on David Klinghoffer, “Darwin Faithful Indirectly Affirm Darwin-Hitler Link”, BeliefNet, 2009]

So you see, if Weikart’s evidence is challenged, he lowers the bar: he can’t prove “direct”, but then “indirect” is easier to support, and has a much lower evidentiary standard. But, with creationist audiences, the rule is different: creationists don’t care about evidentiary standards, so every single one of Weikart’s collaborators can tell the choir that Darwin led “directly” to Hitler.

Of course creationists can say that Weikart says “Darwin… led directly to Hitler,” and they are good pious Christians and Weikart will work with them to keep society moral, as fundamentalists always have.

But if an evolutionist says that Weikart says Darwin led “directly” to Hitler, Weikart will call him a damn dirty liar. Only horrible people like Darwinists would say that!

  5. Ceteris Paribus

Well, being headquartered in Medford, Oregon, WND should know whereof it speaks on the subject of eugenics. The state of Oregon passed its initial eugenics law in 1917, providing that the state could perform forced sterilizations on its citizens, basically those in prisons or mental institutions.

The law went thru several iterations in following years. The 1923 revision extended the forced sterilizations to those outside institutional walls, and included

“persons, male or female, who are feeble-minded, insane, epileptic, habitual criminals, moral degenerates and sexual perverts, who are, or … who are likely to become, a menace to society[emphasis added]”

The Oregon eugenics law was not formally repealed until 1983, nearly 40 years after the death of Adolph Hitler, and the Nuremberg trials that followed which shed considerable public attention on the evils of eugenics

In the time between the end of WWII and 1983, one can only wonder how hard and how long some of the current writers and editors of WND worked to bring about the repeal of the eugenics law in Oregon, or any of the other 29 states which had passed similar laws.

A good resource for the history of eugenics laws in the US is at:

  6. Retired Prof

I simply cannot understand how anyone can claim with a straight face that Darwin invented eugenics (or intentional selection, another name for selective breeding). He saw in the example of intentional selection, which over previous centuries had given rise to diverse forms of crop plants and domestic animals, the possibility of natural selection, with a history going back as far as living things existed.

  7. Lots of good info from Diogenes.

I’ve found a few things myself here which helps show the xian historical basis for anti-semitism and more stuff here which deals with Weikart. I posted some info that I had found.

  8. retiredsciguy

…shows that Darwinian theory, “which is scientifically bankrupt, has probably been responsible for more bloodshed than anything else in the history of humanity,” said Jerry Newcomb

A very strong case can be made that it’s religion that is responsible for more bloodshed than anything else in the history of humanity.

  9. WND claim:

Your eyes are not deceiving you.

Indeed they don’t. The actual Agents of the Deception here are not at all difficult to identify….

  10. DI John West is a champion at forwarding the Hitler/Darwin connection. I’ve heard him a couple of times expound on the subject (at church groups of course where he blathers on).

What might also be interesting is the fact that in the U.S. the eugenics craze took hold before Hitler’s time, where states passed various legislation promoting eugenics and sterilization of the lower, undesirable classes of people. The first such law was passed by the Republican governor of Indiana, and was followed by similar laws elsewhere. (See the Wikipedia overview on this topic of eugenics).

  11. @Reynold:

I read some of your posts, that’s great. But one caveat: You misspell Karl Lueger [it’s u-umlaut which in English is rendered “ue”] and you incorrectly call him a Christian preacher. He was a politician, the mayor of Vienna, in the Austrian branch of the Christian Social Party.

The German branch of the Christian Social Party was founded by Adolph Stoecker, a Lutheran pastor who was the court chaplain to the Kaiser in the 19th century. Stoecker discovered that you could win elections by concocting anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, at that time an innovation. Lueger’s Austrian CSP copied their policies.

  12. Ah, so he was a christian politician (or at least a politician who pretended to be)?

  13. I had read that he was a member of a that party, but I assumed for some reason that he was also a street preacher. It’s been a while since I read “Mein Kampf”.

  14. About eugenics, the Panda’s Thumb has an interesting article: Dr. West, meet Dr. Tinkle, Creationist eugenicist.

  15. Diogenes: I added your correction to my post that you had linked to.
