Creationist Wisdom #563: Evolution Causes Sodomy

Today’s letter-to-the-editor appears in the Argus Leader of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It’s titled Evolution and its consequences. An icon below the headline takes you to the newspaper’s comments feature.

Because the writer isn’t a politician, preacher, or other public figure, we won’t embarrass or promote him by using his full name. We’ll use only his first name, which is John. Excerpts from his letter will be enhanced with our Curmudgeonly commentary and some bold font for emphasis. Here we go!

“Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination,” Leviticus 18:22. Embracing the theory of evolution is one of the main reasons for the growing consensus of abominable same-sex marriages.

Whoa! That kind of marriage isn’t a subject we talk about here, but then, it’s never come up in this context. We’ve seen Darwin and his theory of evolution blamed for most of the evils in the world, but we don’t recall this claim before. Let’s see how John backs up his accusation:

Romans 1:18-23 speaks about people rejecting the existence of the creator that is revealed in the creation. This rejection and ingratitude causes men’s — and women’s — foolish hearts to be darkened, and they become fools who think they are wise. Romans 1:24-28 speaks about the fact that God gives them up and gives them over to a reprobate mind.

Okay, but where’s the sodomy? John explains:

The significance of this is in the fact that the thing to which God gives them up consists specifically of same-sex perversion: uncleanness through the lusts of their own hears [sic], to dishonor their own bodies between themselves, vile affections of lesbianism and male sodomy.

Oh. We didn’t know that. Then John quotes some local preacher:

Not only do people reject the truth of God’s written revelation in the Scriptures, they even reject his unwritten revelation in the creation. Rather than acknowledge the self-evident truth that the existence of a creation presupposes the existence of a creator, they embrace the theory of evolution and live as if there were no God who will judge them in the afterlife.

Ah yes, we embrace Darwin’s theory without regard to the Lake of Fire. The next excerpt seems to be a continuation of the preacher’s words:

When this happens, God gives them over to a reprobate mind, which leads to same-sex perversion. In a nutshell, the flood of sodomy is a judgment on the U.S. for its rejection of God’s revelation of himself.

Egad! John concludes with this dire warning:

Those who are in favor of same-sex marriages — clergy, also — are also of a reprobate mind and will be judged as such. “Turn or burn.”

We’re confused. Darwin didn’t publish his theory until 1859. Why was sodomy mentioned in the bible? Was it a prophecy of things to come? Anyway, dear reader, now you know where Darwin’s theory will lead you. It’s inevitable! Repent before it’s too late. You’ve been warned!

  1. Well, John, isn’t the sky fairy alleged to have created all the animals other than humans too? Anyone who knows anything about animals knows that a substantial fraction ( 10 to 15 % ) of most vertebrate species engages in some level of same sex activity. So, either the sky fairy isn’t paying much attention, or doesn’t much care. Why do you care?

  2. If there’s a “thou shalt not” in the Bible, chances are good that there were a few people doing whatever that was. Generally speaking, you don’t make a rule against something if people aren’t already dping it.

  3. If we take the KJV as the definitive text of the Bible, this passage tells us something about “kind” – that “mankind” is different from “womankind”. I’m not sure what baraminology can make of that.

I think the letter write is correct; if humans hadn’t evolved, then we couldn’t engage in sodomy.

  5. Wikipedia says of Homosexual behavior in animals
“As of 1999, about 500 species, ranging from primates to gut worms, have been documented engaging in same-sex behaviors.
According to the organizers of the 2006 Against Nature? exhibit, it has been observed in 1,500 species.

  6. Not only do people reject the truth of God’s written revelation in the Scriptures, they even reject his unwritten revelation in the creation. Rather than acknowledge the self-evident truth that the existence of a creation presupposes the existence of a creator, they embrace the theory of evolution and live as if there were no God who will judge them in the afterlife. . . .

Ah, yes. Belief in evolution turns people into preverts. It all makes sense now.

  7. By some complicated Biblical interpretation, it is said that evolution was introduced by the Biblical character Nimrod. See the Wikipedia article on Nimrod for some of the elaborations of the Nimrod story.

Rather than acknowledge the self-evident truth that the existence of a creation presupposes the existence of a creator….

and the creator is — random mutation and natural selection.

  9. MichaelF, will you join me praying to the god called rmns? Then our offspring might be a bit better adapted than we are …..

  10. Gotta love those wacky fundamentalist homophobes. I love the “turn or burn” comment. You think John is enjoying a little schadenfreude as he waits for the afterlife?

  11. John seriously needs help. I’m not a psychiatrist, but even I can discern a clear psychological disorder here. I bet he will soon be leaving Sioux Falls to join the Westboro Baptist Church. For that matter, maybe he’s already there — and the Argus Leader of Sioux Falls, South Dakota is the only paper that would print his letter that was sent to several dozen small-town newspapers.

  12. Is the Argus Leader a real newspaper? I mean. would any real newspaper with an ounce of journalistic integrity publish such a letter? Are you sure it’s from South Dakota, and not some alien world in a sci-fi film? ‘We Klingons do not approve of sodomy… and what is this you earth people call – evilushow?’

  13. Mark is right in his observation that prohibitions are never issued before the crime is committed.

  14. Hans-Richard Grümm

That a creation requires a creator is a tautology (or pretty close to one). What its users forget to argue is that the universe which we inhabit and observe *is* a creation.

  15. Since this dimwit thinks the buyBull is the word of gawd and to be obeyed then when I lay with a man I am FORCED to have sex with him.
it states…..“Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination,” Leviticus 18:22.
OK when I lay with a woman I sleep so when I lay with a man I can’t just lay there and sleep cuz that would be an abomination!!! SO I must have sex with him. & Let the xtians begin…”But…But…but….”
I find it amazing how some people use a book of really very bad fairy tales as if that is fact and proof.

  16. michaelfugate says: “and the creator is — random mutation and natural selection.”

mnb0 responds: “MichaelF, will you join me praying to the god called rmns?”

A proper deity needs an awe-inspiring name. Perhaps: Ramu Natu.

  17. Klaatu barada nikto!

  18. The full quote being

    Gort, Klaatu barada nikto

Which takes a lot of guts to say faced with being discombubulated by an alien robot!

  19. Didn’t you know that there was no sodomy, not one recorded instance ever in human history, until the very date that the Origin was published in 1859? Then, on that day, humans started sodomizing each other like crazy and have never stopped.

    That is just historical fact.

  20. L.Long…great loop hole. My understanding it is legal in Georgia for a man to have sex with his grandaughter, since the incest laws come out of the Bible and the Bible misses that one.

  21. I’m not sure what baraminology can make of that.

Not much. Even though kind appears in some English translations, it is not based upon a MIN in the Hebrew text. So this is not a BARAMIN (kind) example. But you are quite correct about it being worth checking out to see if it would undermine baraminology arguments from YECs.

  22. @Professor Tertiuis
I really have to apologize for being facetious.

  23. Techreseller

Michaelfugate, you beat me to it. Of course evolution causes sodomy. Without sexual reproduction it would be impossible.
