Rev. David Rives — Design and Beauty

We were completely taken by surprise when the Drool-o-tron™ alerted us with its sirens and flashing lights. The blinking letters of its wall display said WorldNetDaily (WND). The Drool-o-tron™ had found the latest video by the brilliant and articulate leader of David Rives Ministries.

Our computer was locked onto this headline at WND: All examples of beauty, functionality need 1 thing. How could we resist clicking on a headline like that?

The actual title of the rev’s video is “Why is there beauty in design?” What a great question! He explains that all functional things — like skyscraper buildings — are designed. And good design is also beautiful. Not only man-made things, but also a rose, a hummingbird, a puppy.

Then he tells us that every example of beauty and functionality requires design. Did you get that? All beautiful things are designed! And we can learn who the designer of the universe is in the bible. Isn’t that amazing?

The rev is all dressed up for this one — a dark blue suit and light blue tie. He’s the cutest rev you’ve ever seen! This video runs for almost two and a half minutes before the commercial at the end. It’s very inspirational. We urge you to click over to WND and experience it for yourself.

As we always do with the rev’s videos, we dedicate the comments section for your use as an Intellectual Free Fire Zone. You know the rules. Okay, the comments are open. Go for it!

    their/there . . . but you’ve noticed that already.

  2. That was my typo, realthog. I just fixed it.

This is actually boring. It’s the same old argument recycled for the nth time: (1) Anything complex and/or functional must have been designed. (2) Life is complex and functional. Therefore, (3) life must have been designed. Therefore, (4) there is a Designer. And therefore, (5)Genesis is a history text. Q.E.D.

Note how everything depends on that first premise. If that one isn’t true, the rest of the argument collapses.

For that matter, even if (1) through (4) are all true, (5) doesn’t logically follow; the Designer (blessed be He, She or It!) could have created the universe just as actual scientists say it happened, having set up only the initial conditions (such as the laws of nature).

  4. Taking advantage of the free fire zone …
There is a report in Thursday’s “Nature” of fossils related to Homo floresiensis (“hobbit”) which seem to rule out their being only diseased humans. There is information in the Wikipedia article on H.flor.

  5. Yeah, it made a Dutch and a Belgian newspaper. I was wondering what Ol’Hambo thought of it.

  6. Tall buildings are ugly!!! So obviously they were not designed!! And I’m not too fond of roses either, so…….

  7. Necessity is the mother of invention.
If things are designed, the design is a response to some need.
    What is needful for God?
People resort to design because they are constrained by the laws of nature. If I want a building, I have to take account of the properties of the available building materials. I have to plan whether it will work. I am not omnipotent.

It’s seems easy to concede that the puppy or my favorite old maple tree has been designed, perhaps even to concede that an invisible deity (or some number of ’em) did it. But will the GodSquad ever admit that the process of design through nature is crueler than “The Death Of 1000 Strokes” carried out through the birth and death of millions that were selected “in” or “out”? And that the design process went on for millions of years before there were any misled religionists around to moan, mumble, preach, or sing prayers to those undetectable designers? I think not!

  9. YECs deny that there were millions of years, and they deny that there was any death before the Fall of Adam, and they deny that there is any design by natural selection.

What was the meaning of God before he created the universe and everything?

Once again, our cute little bible boy shows us the epitome of intellectual milquetoast.

  12. Are slugs designed or something else since they aren’t “beautiful”? Except to other slugs anyway.

  13. Umm Ford did not invent the car. He perfected the assembly line. Try Daimler and Benz.
