The Intelligent Designer’s Role in History

It appears that the Discovery Institute isn’t even trying to seem rational any more. Look what just appeared at their creationist blog: ‘There Is Intelligent Design of American History’. It was written by David Klinghoffer, a Discoveroid “senior fellow” (i.e., flaming, full-blown creationist), who eagerly functions as their journalistic slasher and poo flinger. His post is as brief as it is vacuous. We’ll give you a few excerpts, with bold font added by us for emphasis.

Congratulations to our friend Michael Medved whose book The American Miracle: Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic [Amazon link] will be out on November 29.

Ah yes, Medved. Here’s the Discoveroids’ write-up on him: Michael Medved, Senior Fellow – Discovery Institute.

Most of Klinghoffer’s post consists of a Medved video; otherwise he doesn’t have much to say. But what little he does say is pure gold. Here it comes:

He [Medved] spoke this week on the book’s theme at the Reagan Library in Southern California — a fantastic speech — and gave a welcome shout-out to ID at the end. “There is intelligent design of American history,” Michael declares, meaning a “pattern of happy accidents” not plausibly explained in any other way.

[*Begin Drool Mode*] Ooooooooooooh! [*End Drool Mode*] The intelligent designer — blessed be he! — intervened in American history! Isn’t that amazing?

Other than a reference to an earlier post about cosmic coincidences (they’re the designer’s handiwork), this is the rest of Klinghoffer’s post:

The book sounds great. I can’t wait to read it.

So there you are. We told you Klinghoffer’s post was as brief as it is vacuous, but now it seems we were wrong. The vacuity exceeds the brevity.

  1. This country has had a pretty rough history. A devastating civil war, assassination of popular presidents, the great depression, a long hard struggle for equal rights, and on and on.

All of that was designed? They were happy accidents? I think that is a rather extreme insult to the designer, if there is one.

The final ‘happy accident’ will be the Rapture, I assume.

  3. The treatment of Native Americans since Europeans crawled ashore looks like it has yahweh’s nasty fingerprints all over it.

  5. I’m a tiny bit confused. Were witch burnings, genocide, slavery, the civil war, the depressions, etc., etc. also happy accidents, or merely slightly light-hearted divertissements? And let’s not even talk about the gay muslim abortionists of today, my face already hurts from grinning so much.

  6. Of course there was intelligent (or anyway, semi-intelligent) design of American history! It was designed by human beings, all striving to manipulate events to the advantage of themselves and others they cared about at the expense of others they did not care about or actively despised. That’s why it’s so burdened with terrible events. And the same goes for the history of every other nation, present or past. How dare Klinghoffer and Medved insult God by pinning the blame for, say, the election just past on Him!
