Creationist Wisdom #789: Evidence of Design

This is all we could find today. The title is Made by Design. It appears to be a preacher’s letter, but our guess is that he couldn’t get it published anywhere, so he paid to have it appear in the Voice of the Valley of Maple Valley, Washington. They have a letter-to-the-editor section, but at the end of this one it says “PAID MESSAGE.”

Unless the letter-writer is a politician, preacher, or other public figure, we won’t embarrass or promote him by using his full name. Today we’ve got a preacher — at least we think we do, but his name doesn’t appear anywhere. At the end of the letter it says:

Would you like to know your Creator? We would love to introduce you. Call us at [deleted], or visit us at Taylor Creek Church. You may also join us each Sunday, 9 AM for Sunday school, and 10:15 AM for Worship. We are located at [address deleted].

Their pastor’s name is Jason Katen. We assume he wrote this thing, but we can’t be certain. Anyway, we’ll give you a few excerpts from the church’s paid letter, enhanced with our Curmudgeonly commentary, and some bold font for emphasis. Here we go!

There is no greater evidence for God than life. For decades Christians have pointed to the creation as evidence of a Master Designer whom the Bible says created all things – Genesis 1. On the other hand, those who don’t believe in God, or reject Him, have for decades proclaimed that science would settle the issue concerning creation, and do away with the need for God.

Jeepers — this controversy has been going on for decades! Then the rev says:

Where do we stand today? The more scientists study creation, the more evidence there is that we are fearfully and wonderfully made by an “intelligent designer.” In fact, it has been stated that for every door science opens, it reveals ten yet unopened doors. In other words, the deeper they dig, the more overwhelming and marvelous things become.

Indeed. The more we learn, the more we are impressed by the evidence of Oogity Boogity! The rev continues:

Even leading proponents of evolution have to admit that living things give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! It’s the Watchmaker analogy. Let’s read on:

One of the doors that has been opened is the ability to investigate life at the molecular level. The more scientists learn about what makes us tick, the more wonderful things get.

[*Begin Drool Mode*] Ooooooooooooh! [*End Drool Mode*] Then he quotes someone named Hunt:

The information contained in DNA the size of a pinhead would fill a stack of books 500 times as high as the distance from earth to the moon! It would take tens of thousands of desktop computers to store and process that amount of data.

[*Begin Drool Mode*] Ooooooooooooh! [*End Drool Mode*] After giving us that stunning information, the rev declares:

That’s a lot to just happen by chance!

No doubt, dear reader, you’re as impressed as we are. And now we come to the end:

Truly we have been “fearfully and wonderfully made”. The more I look at life, the more I worship my Lord and Savior who created all things, and the more peace and rest I have. What about you?

Good, huh? We can’t figure out why the rev had to pay to have this letter published. His wisdom should be in every school’s textbooks.

  1. Well, there is one sentence with which I can agree “…the deeper they dig, the more overwhelming and marvelous things become.” Just get yerself a textbook on Functional Histology, and see how marvelous things are – one of my most favorites is the interaction between the podocytes and capillaries in the kidney. If only there was a way to prove that an Intelligent Designer was involved…..

  2. Whatever an omnipotent creator does, he does not need anything to do it. That is what it means to be omnipotent. God does not need to resort to design.
So, if we can prove that design is necessary, then we know that it isn’t created.

  3. I’ve read his book o’BS and the gawd shown there is too stoopid & too big an ahole to have created much of anything

  4. Jason writes “…the deeper they dig, the more overwhelming and marvelous things become.”

I’ll agree to a certain extent; living things certainly are interesting. BUT the deeper we dig, the more obvious it becomes that they are NOT the product of design. Biochemical pathways are cobbled together, genes, chromosomes and whole genomes are randomly duplicated (and contain a lot of junk), development often takes place by circuitous routes that betray relationships to other organisms, repair mechanisms are inefficient, and some proteins turn rogue destroying mammalian brains. And why did the designer make so many bacteria and so many beetles?

And, Jason, it doesn’t take 10s of 1000s of computers to store a pinhead of DNA information; isolated from a single organism that much would largely be redundant. The sequence information in a human sperm corresponds to about 725 megabytes, so it easily stores on a small flash drive.

  5. Actually Jason, the only purpose living things appear to have is managing to stay alive long enough to reproduce. And as Scientist points out, the living things the alleged designer was apparently most fond of are bacteria and beetles.

  6. And tardigrades. Don’t forget tardigrades. They can inhabit a much larger fraction of the universe than we can.

  7. “fearfully and wonderfully made by an “intelligent designer”
I cannot help wondering if anyone has ever ‘fearfully’ designed some furniture.

And argentinean ants. They rule the world. They are the stewards of the Grand Old Designer (blessed be His/Her/Its name).

  8. Sure they point to “God’s creation” as evidence for the existence of their god, but when it comes to the details, well those are wrong because they conflict with the Bible. Evolution? Impossible. Billions of galaxies? An illusion. Age of the Earth? A test of faith.

Ridiculous, but like pandering politicians, the preacher is preaching to the choir, not to win converts but to show there is “support” for their ideology (based upon lies and lack of understanding, but, hey).

Pastor Katon asserts: “In fact, it has been stated that for every door science opens, it reveals ten yet unopened doors. In other words, the deeper they dig, the more overwhelming and marvelous things become.”

Maybe overwhelming. But then maybe not so marvelous for the True Believers [TM]. The thermodynamic principle of “entropy” was developed from early in the Enlightenment, which eventually separated science from religion (and/or alchemy). Basically, entropy shows that the energy of all systems inevitably degrades over time. So the Pastor’s hopes for some future end-time resurrection bonanza for his minions is not really a good bet. Every time a new door of science is opened, some more entropy leaks out of religion.

This one again: “Unbelievers are trying to undermine our faith in God!” Or, in one of the more revealing versions of that outcry, “We’re being attacked by the intelligent, educated segment of the culture.” (Thank you, Pastor Mummert!)

Even leading proponents of evolution have to admit that living things give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.

Even assuming that’s true (a metaphor is not an “admission”), appearance isn’t fact. Darwinians understand this; creationists seem to have a harder time doing so.

  11. So are we supposed to call it “the creation” like Jason does? Is saying “the Him is the intelligent designer and the evolution is just the path to the hell” correct Jasonese?
