Solar Eclipse Free Fire Zone

The total eclipse that will be visible in a narrow band across the US will occur on 21 August — less than 22 days from now. Here’s NASA’s page where they have dozens of links to information — including maps such as the one above this post: Eclipse 2017.

We’ve been hoping for some crazed creationist predictions about the end of the world, but the only one we found was a few months ago at WorldNetDaily. In case you missed it, here’s what we said about it: Solar Eclipse Means Catastrophe Is Coming.

There’s no other news, so we now declare this to be an Intellectual Free Fire Zone. We’re open for the discussion of pretty much anything — science, politics, economics, whatever — as long as it’s tasteful and interesting. Banter, babble, bicker, bluster, blubber, blather, blab, blurt, burble, boast — say what you will. But avoid flame-wars and beware of the profanity filters.

The comments are open, dear reader. Have at it!

  1. So in what way does the eclipse prove gods word. I’m sure ol Hambo has something for that.

  2. I have seen an argument that the existence of a total solar eclipse is determined by a very fine tuning of the sizes of the Moon and the Sun and the distance from Earth to Sun and from Earth to Moon. Therefore, those parameters must be designed.

  3. TomS, the Discoveroids have made that argument — see Solar Eclipses Prove Intelligent Design.

I notice creationists are working the possibility of Ice Ages (especially the last) into their thinking, even though there is no mention of such in their guide to delusion. But have we ever asked them to explain the massive impacts on the moon and Earth and what was their answer? Pre-Flood? Post-Flood?

  5. Ross
I am thinking a post flood period hyperimpactation that coincided with hypermicroevolution

  6. @Ross Cameron
There was a creationist who explained the impact craters on the Moon as being the result of Satan’s artillery in his battle with Archangel Michael. This may have been borrowed from Paradise Lost.

  7. TomS, you’re thinking of Guillermo Gonzalez, co-author with Jay Richards of Privileged Planet, most unfairly denied tenure at Iowa State after his failure to earn it during his time there, a veritable martyr to Intelligent Design. More on this and his other activities on his Wikipedia page

    Thank you, but clarification:
Gonzales for the fine-tuning of the solar eclipse, which I mentioned earlier.
Not the satanic origin of lunar craters which I mentioned just before your post.

  9. That’s right. Gonzalez is an old earth creationist, but does have some connection with reality

@MichaelFugate. I liked how Uranus is involved in Trump’s natal Mars! It simply disrupts everything it touches! Great article.

  11. Astrology tends to be exceptionally vague, but perhaps I could offer a different conclusion–nothing happens to Trump, it is the United States that is cursed because he remains in office.

  12. The fact that the earth is round affects the duration of totality of the eclipse see here for an explanation, along with a lot of other good info.
