Creationist Wisdom #829: To Cure Society’s Ills

Today’s letter-to-the-editor appears in The Wilson Times of Wilson, North Carolina. It’s titled God: The driving force behind scientific miracles, and the newspaper has a comments feature.

Because the writer isn’t a politician, preacher, or other public figure, we won’t embarrass or promote him by using his full name. His first name is Tom. Excerpts from his letter will be enhanced with our Curmudgeonly commentary and some bold font for emphasis. Here we go!

There are 30,000,000,000,000 cells in the average human body, each with hundreds of organelles; sub-cellular components and every one of them producing, synthesizing and destroying proteins, hormones and other chemicals essential to life. As just one example, every cell utilizes about one billion molecules of energy, known as ATP, per minute. This all goes on second after second in an essentially flawless manner until we die.

Your Curmudgeon is overwhelmed! Tom says:

DNA is the pi-èce de résistance [sic] of the cell, a miracle of design and complexity that makes any computer code seem like the work of amateurs.

It is indeed a miracle of design! After that he tells us:

In this season where we celebrate the greatest Miracle, it seems we overlook the everyday, seemingly mundane, miracles that occur within each of us.

Thanks to Tom, we shall never again overlook those miracles! He continues:

How is it that such a mind-boggling array of reactions occurs and does not degrade or disintegrate as time goes on and as the Second Law of Thermodynamics dictates it should? All systems tend toward disarray, entropy and do not maintain their orderly function. As an example of entropy, think of an older car versus a brand-new one.

Egad — our bodies are immune to the Second Law of Thermodynamics! Let’s read on:

Science is mostly silent on this issue [Hee hee!] but points to the eventual disintegration of frail, elderly bodies as evidence that entropy does take over and break down systems. The fact remains that all living beings are astonishing examples of design and creation.

Verily, we are examples of design and creation. Another excerpt:

Nevertheless, over the course of the last 150 years or so, the Designer of our world has been relegated to a second-place if not outright mythological status. False narratives such as evolution have taken God’s place and we are so inculcated that most people are impervious to the ridiculous assertion that life could have arisen from non-living elements given enough eons.

Evolution is a false narrative for fools! Here’s more:

Believers in an omniscient and benevolent God must reassert His supremacy in our lives and world and push back on the myth of evolution and the emergence of life from non-living matter without the intervention of the Creator.

Tom is right! We gotta push back! And here’s the end of his letter:

Only then will some of the ills of our society be righted; or as the Good Book says, “the rough places will be made plain.”

Yes — oh yes! — that’s the way to cure the ills of our society. Great letter, Tom!

  1. Once again, we are told how something which is so unlike any design that it must be designed!

  2. The only miracle this season celebrates is the astonishing large numbers that by into the BS that never happened!!!! And the astonishing level of complexity of the human body demonstrates there is nothing good enough to have designed this body ON PURPOSE! ANd in contrast this body is so badly designed that the designer if real is incompetent!

  3. Tom, mate… I am so over this “design” BS. Deadset, you are being such dipstick; just cut to the chase and say “God did it”, and save us all a lot of time and bother.

I mean, the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Sport, that one has been done to death already. And “design and complexity” is only a hair’s breadth away from “irreducible complexity”, which is the start of a very slippery slope indeed. Best avoid the technical arguments, they do you no credit. Just say what’s on your mind.

But there’s a problem Tom, and you need to take a good hard look at yourself. Hankering for the past isn’t going to cut it. Change is real, whether it’s social or scientific. You can’t pick and choose. Either embrace change, or consign yourself to a life of bitterness.

“Nevertheless, over the course of the last 150 years or so, the Designer of our world has been relegated to a second-place if not outright mythological status.”

And not a moment too soon! It took God many lonely billions of years playing with amoebas and ducks and Fundamentalists before He could get a well deserved vacation. Here’s a toast to God – and feel free to check back again in a billion or so years to see how things are going then.

  5. Better science education is the only cure to this nonsense. Add a bit of philosophy of science, and people will learn that science doesn’t deal with the supernatural, regardless of whether it exists or not.

  6. Wow. Designer Kool Aid with no artificial sweetener ! Praise the Lord and bah hum bug on the scientific method ! Its a miracle !

  7. “molecules of energy”
??? When I was trained to become a teacher physics I must have missed this concept. So I consulted good old Wikipedia and learned that ATP is responsible for intracellular energy transfer. Ah well, we can’t really expect any creacrapper to understand any science properly. How intracellular energy transfer falsified Evolution Theory is beyond my understanding.

  8. “How is it that such a mind-boggling array of reactions occurs and does not degrade or disintegrate as time goes on and as the Second Law of Thermodynamics dictates it should?”

“Science is mostly silent on this issue but points to the eventual disintegration of frail, elderly bodies as evidence that entropy does take over and break down systems.”

“The fact remains that all living beings are astonishing examples of design and creation.”

    If A, then B.
    Not A, then….STILL B!

It is truly a Christmas Miracle.

  9. And remember that the laws of nature are designed to make life possible.

For example, if the Second Law of Thermodynaics were even slightly broken, life would not be possible.

  10. Another miswired brain that rejects evidence, believes the supernatural. So much for brains being intelligently designed.

  11. By the way, red blood cells do not contain mitochondria. What little ATP (the energy molecule) they make is made the old fashioned way by glycolysis, a reaction that does not require oxygen. That process has been around for billions of years and is an elegant example of the applicability of thermodynamics in living things.

Why do big numbers impress these people so much?

  13. Why write out 30,000,000,000,000 rather than 30 trillion or 3×10^13?
