Creationist Wisdom #854: The Root Cause

Today’s letter-to-the-editor appears in the Pueblo Chieftain of Pueblo, Colorado. It’s titled Root cause of violence, and the newspaper has a comments feature.

Because the writer isn’t a politician, preacher, or other public figure, we won’t embarrass or promote him by using his full name. His first name is Tim. Excerpts from his letter will be enhanced with our Curmudgeonly commentary and some bold font for emphasis. Here we go!

The Pueblo Chieftain recently had a guest column that pegged video games as the “root problem” of school shootings. “Root problems” would be an internal belief or a world view that fuels the callousness, hate or violence we see in the school shootings. The “root” problem lies in our beliefs, not an external factor like a video game.

Yeah — video games can’t be the “root” of the problem. Tim knows what the root really is. He says:

We teach our kids from preschool through college and beyond that they are products of evolution. My biggest issue with evolution is not all the scientific laws it would need to break to occur [Hee hee!], it is about the philosophy or belief system that comes with it.

Ooooooooooooh! This is gonna be good! Tim tells us:

No God, no life after death and no absolutes removes any reason for morality.

Right! That’s why evolutionists are all such violent scoundrels. He continues:

School shootings, Racism, sexism and dehumanizing of other people are not marks of insanity but the “fruit” of a “root” belief, like evolution, that tells them that those people are “less than human.”

What a great letter. Every sentence is pure gold! Let’s read on:

If we want to stop school shootings, I suggest we stop lying to ourselves about who we are and start speaking the truth.

Yes, it’s time for The Truth. Here’s more:

We’ve been created in the image of God as male or female. We are not accidents or animals. We are moral agents with a free will to choose good or evil and are accountable to our Creator for our choice.

Now that we think about it, before Darwin there wasn’t any violence, racism, sexism, etc. It all started with him! And now we come to the end:

When we die, we will stand before Him as our Savior or our Judge. No one would be prone to such destructive behavior if they believed this instead of evolution. [Scripture reference.] Jesus is the answer.

Well, dear reader, now will you abandon your belief in evolution? Or will you continue your evil ways until it’s too late?

“We’ve been created in the image of God as male or female. We are not accidents or animals. We are moral agents with a free will to choose good or evil and are accountable to our Creator for our choice.”

This sounds a lot like Stockholm Syndrom

  2. No God, no evidence whatsoever
no life after death ancient myths, again no evidence, just empty words
and no absolutes removes any reason for morality. death and taxes

Who knew that Adam and Eve were only expelled from the Garden in 1859! The earth was in edenic bliss until Darwin introduced death into the world. Doesn’t this make Genesis incorrect?

  4. It seems obvious to me that we are mammals, that we are vertebrates, that we are multicellular organisms. What leads one to think that we are not also obviously animals?

“Tim’s” declaration that “[T]he image of God as male or female” is the only choice of humanity is a bit short of the reality. Tim should consider that not every human person is just lusting for a chance to breed as many fertile females and males as possible. But I guess that it results from a short sided kind of logic that only horny clerics and parishioners could appreciate.

Look around, and notice that humans are composed of a wider spectrum, which includes male, female, and other gender designations. They are all comfortably contained in the single Human clade as all of our ancestors and progeny.

In fact the total of all living humans who are at this moment actively involved in procreation is surely dwarfed by the most of us, who together are either too young or too old to even bother about which gender they now have on their birth certificate.

It just doesn’t make sense to send Evangelicals such as Tim to go around inventorying the daily stock of breeding humans. Why can’t the Evangelicals just go with the flow, and stop trying to cause problems that don’t exist in the real world?

  6. Just think of all those peaceful paradises without evolution like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Iraq. Compare those with the living hell that is FInland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Where would you rather live, Tim?

  7. Its amazing how religious nutjobs say this crap, when its their own books o’BS that teach hate ,bigotry, killing and says its all OK with gawd.

I will just keep wasting away again in Margaritaville! My chances of a happier life is much greater. If it turns out Tim is right, however, I will just offer God a Perfect Margarita and a trip to Margaritaville. It is the third block on the right once you get past the Pearly Gates. How She/he/It refuse? What would heaven be without a good one? Heard that St Peter makes a mean one with an extra shot of Cabo Wabo.

  9. Today I learned something new.

“the philosophy or belief system that comes with it.”
I never realized that atheist me had the same philosophy or belief system as the catholic Evolutionary Biologist Kenneth Miller.

@TomS expresses his amazement: “What leads one to think that we are not also obviously animals?”
A combination of wishful thinking and the desire to feel superior. You could also say “a quite unchristian lack of modesty”.

  10. @CP wants us to use our eyes: “Look around, and notice that humans are composed of a wider spectrum.”
And one would expect a god to embody the widest spectrum of all. Those arrogant believers want to limit the god they claim to worship.

“Animals of the MONKEY class are furnished with hands instead of paws; their ears, eyes, eye-lids, lips, and breasts, are like those of mankind; their internal conformation also bears some distant likeness; and the whole offers a picture that may mortify the pride of such as make their persons the principal objects of their admiration.”

  12. Tim tells me “Jesus is the answer”. Damn, why didn’t I think of that in calculus class when I was asked for the integral of x**2dx?

  13. If Jesus is the answer, what was the question again?

EVOLUTION IS REAL …..scripture is nothing but old day “TYLER HENRYS” trying to figure out what causes deadly floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, thunder, earthquakes, and volcanoes. China, the middle East, Japan, and tons of other countries never heard of Jesus….but God is universal simply due the the fear of the elements (before science/Doppler became known). Clouds looked like a heaven, and volcanoes looked like hell, hence the massive “rituals and sacrifices to God.” After all, Greeks had a God of Thunder, Rain, Sun, and Wind, etc. Jesus was just another false Prophets who wanted the Romans to lower taxes. He had his 12 disciples cover for him and spread his healing lies. The only reason the Romans finally BELIEVED Jesus might be REAL was due the the EARTHQUAKE that ocurred during his execution on the cross….Here again, it’s all about the FEAR of the elements (NATURE)….FYI: EVOLUTION is real…not Euro-Scripture !!! dummy ….All humans migrated out of Africa….some went to Asia first (where oxygen levels were low due to altitude)….this is how humans got “shorter.” Some Africans took the straight root into Europe…- the “NEANDERTHALS”…..The cold northern climates caused our melanin to lighten (and hair straighten) due to lack of sun-fry !!! ***We started from mice to APES….and the human GENOME proves it…..!!!! APES had large BROWS….. da !!!!!!1

There was evil before Jesus, during the God of Thunder and God of Rain days, and there was evil in the animal kingdom, as well. EVIL promotes survival. After all, if we were all smiley faced clones, we would die and wither away as the wind blows us over !!! GOD IS NATURE…..GOD is the ability for life to begin from water and sun….albeit taking billions of years to lead to a**hole idiots like “the lot of you all.” EVOLUTION IS GOD….you idiots would not even be as dumb as you are without it !!! Be thankful you exist now and stop being so arrogant that all you worry about is living forever, seeing loved ones when you die, etc. DEATH is death…..you can still live a good, loving life (REGARDLESS) if it’s your ONLY life. THAT should make it even more PRECIOUS….but not for egomaniacs who suffer from a sense of always WANTING MORE !!!! At least animals don’t suffer from that hideous sense of entitlement !!!! Our primordial ancestors are better than us (in that respect) !!!!!!

  16. We’ve been created in the image of God as male or female. We are not accidents or animals. We are moral agents with a free will to choose good or evil and are accountable to our Creator for our choice.

What, we can’t be moral agents if we’re “accidents or animals”?

Evidently “Tim” is unacquainted with the abundant scientific literature concerning experiments and observations in the wild which show that (gasp) even nonhuman animals display at least some aspects of what we would consider morality. But then, since for fundamentalists the only moral issues that really matter are all about sex, sex and, oh yeah, more sex, little things like self-sacrifice don’t count; all that matters is who has you-know-what with whom, how they go about it and whether or not anyone chanted over them to authorize it.
