Klinghoffer: The Smear of Materialism

The Discovery Institute is once again filling the void in their science portfolio by producing and promoting another video. We find this at their creationist blog, written by Klinghoffer: Watch: Biologist Michael Denton on Photosynthesis and Planetary Design. Here are some excerpts, with bold font added by us for emphasis, and occasional Curmudgeonly interjections that look [like this]:

Here is the startling thesis of Michael Denton’s new book, Children of the Light: Astonishing Properties of Sunlight that Make Us Possible, compressed to under three minutes:

Then there’s a video embedded in Klinghoffer’s post. You can click over there and watch the thing if you want to, but your Curmudgeon has no intention of doing so. We’ve already written about Denton’s “startling” book — see An Amazing New Discoveroid Book and also Discoveroids: More About Denton’s New Book. Klinghoffer says:

The precisely tuned partnership of photosynthesis — feeding plants and manufacturing oxygen as a waste product — with the radiation of the Sun, with the nature of Earth’s atmosphere is too convenient to accommodate an explanation depending on blind chance alone.

Ooooooooooooh! A “precisely tuned partnership” like that couldn’t possibly depend on blind chance. We feel the same about the beautifully designed partnership between the dung beetle and its favorite food. Klinghoffer tells us:

The theme of Dr. Denton’s work in the Privileged Species series, capped by Children of the Light [his new book], is that the universe from its beginning billions of years ago has obeyed a purposeful design.

A purposeful design. Yes — oh yes! He continues:

Fire, water, light…the most fundamental aspects of nature around us are finely tuned, awesomely so, with us in mind. It’s planetary design.

Only a fool would deny it. And now we come to the end:

To fully realize this is to wipe clean the smear of dull complacency that materialism tirelessly spreads. These are brief books that pack a very powerful punch.

Isn’t it time, dear reader, that you liberated yourself from the dull complacency of materialism? Well, what are you waiting for? Watch the video, buy the book, and embrace The Truth.

  1. Fire, water, light…the most fundamental aspects of nature

    But this is splendid!

The Discoveroids are nearly re-inventing Empedocles’ Four Elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water). But simpler.

Who says they aren’t at the cutting edge of scientific work?

  2. Dear Klingy and Michael: how many other stars in the universe have photon energy outputs identical to ours? Does the holly bubble tell you that?

  3. “compressed to under three minutes”
That’s some fierce competitiion for the Good Rev Rives.

“To fully realize this is to wipe clean the smear of dull complacency that materialism tirelessly spreads.”
For the uninitiated and for anyone who has forgotten: materialism is IDiot speak for methodological naturalism. Klinkleclapper rejects the scientific method.

  4. We are told that the natural properties of the world are well fit to the appearance of life.
    I’ll accept that.

I wonder about the reaction from those who think that it would take a violation of the laws of nature. Not to mention who disagree on the time scale.

What’s next Megalonyx, the role of love and strife reimagined as the play between good and evil?

  6. Also time – they always forget that the designer spent 14 billion years to create us. (That seems extremely inefficient. I would think a proper designer could just poof everything into existence at once.) Maybe Denton knows why the “designer” works that way. He should explain.

With respect to fire, does Denton think the sun is on fire? Really?

  7. Michael Fugate

One might imagine a medical doctor understanding the role of oxygen, then again one might not…

  8. I don’t know the process by which life came to be on Earth. Creationists may point to this lack of knowledge as a fatal flaw in evolutionnary biology – or, at least, a fatal flaw in natural explanations for the world.
How do these writers address this difficulty for their exposition? How can they justify that the appearance of life is covered by the design of the laws of nature? Do they know that Earth was getting the just-right amount of light for life, when they don’t know what process produced life on Earth?

  9. The theme of Dr. Denton’s work in the Privileged Species series, capped by Children of the Light [his new book], is that the universe from its beginning billions of years ago has obeyed a purposeful design.

    Billions of years? Heresy!

The precisely tuned partnership of photosynthesis — feeding plants and manufacturing oxygen as a waste product — with the radiation of the Sun, with the nature of Earth’s atmosphere is too convenient to accommodate an explanation depending on blind chance alone.

Here we go again: a creationist babbling about “blind chance” rather than acknowledging that life is a product of natural laws, which don’t operate that way.

“Ah, but how does it happen that natural laws are finely tuned to produce life?” is the likely riposte. Creationists think such questions crush Darwinism, but in reality they have things exactly backward based on their own assumption that the universe exists in order to support life–a proposition for which they offer no evidence whatever. It happens that our universe does support life (at least on Earth), but nothing indicates that the universe couldn’t or wouldn’t exist without it.

  10. Enzymatic reactions and signalling driven by light (photons) have evolved numerous times. Photosynthesis is just one of these, and while it is complex (and immensely complicated for students), it sure looks like it was cobbled together from previously existing cellular processes; indeed, one of the key enzymes to make glucose in the dark reaction is one of the most inefficient enzymes known. The evolutionary advantage of photosynthesis is that it taps into an abundant source of energy. All natural.

  11. TomS is generous today: “We are told that the natural properties of the world are well fit to the appearance of life.
    I’ll accept that.”
As only “evilution is wrong” matters to them you can wait until Easter and Pentecost are celebrated on the same day before they’ll discuss the question if natural laws were violated or not. Rather the IDiots will follow the typical dual strategy:

    1. Natural laws violated: evidence for the Grand Old Designer (blessed be MOFO!);
    2. Natural laws not violated: they were designed by the Grand Old Designer, who gave the process a little push here and there with the specific goal of etc. etc. because ignoring it is the smear of materialism.

If you believe in an agent god, you have to find something for it to do.

You can hear the desperation as they approach twenty years of the Wedge..

  14. Michael Fugate

The Wedge has become a wedgie?

  15. As an anxiety-ridden schoolboy, Klinghoffer once left a smear of dull materialist complacency in his undergarments, cruelly exposed to the world when some older biology students gave him an atomic wedgie. The laughter echoed around the school corridors. Even some of the teachers had trouble suppressing a smirk.

Klinghoffer vowed to get even one day. Oh, if only he had telekinetic powers like Sissy Spacek in “Carrie”…

  16. The Design is so Intelligent that it didn’t give rise to complex organisms on Earth until the Sun was halfway through its useful life. What more proof do you want?

  17. A news story about Hurricane Michael says that climate scientists feel more confident of their understanding of hurricanes because of the development of a theory of hurricanes.
    Get that?
It is considered an advance to have a theory. The theory will predict the behavior of a particular hurricane given raw data.
The scientists don’t complain that this means that hurricanes are only a theory.

3 minute video. Slightly longer than the average creationist span of attention.
