The Discovery Institute is lurching into new territory. This just appeared at their creationist blog: Great Minds: Stephen Meyer Interviews Michael Medved About Intelligent Design of U.S. History. It was written by Klinghoffer. Here are some excerpts, with bold font added by us for emphasis, and occasional Curmudgeonly interjections that look [like this]:
ID is a scientific theory [BWAHAHAHAHAHA!] competing with neo-Darwinian evolution, but it’s more than that: a paradigm for understanding human history, especially the history of the United States.
Ooooooooooooh! The intelligent designer — blessed be he! — is deliberately tinkering with human history. Klinghoffer says:
In a new podcast episode of Great Minds with Michael Medved, Mr. Medved switches places with ID theorist [Hee hee!] Stephen Meyer to discuss Medved’s latest book, The American Miracle: Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic.
Here’s Medved’s book at Amazon. Meyer is a Discoveroid “senior fellow” and currently the Program Director of their Center for Science and Culture — the Discoveroids’ creationism shop. Gread minds indeed! Klinghoffer tells us:
Of all the books he’s written, says Medved, “This is the one with all my heart.” And you can tell from this discussion. Meyer asks Medved about the series of amazing coincidences that have guided the history of the country, starting with the meeting of the Pilgrims with their Indian friend Squanto. It begins to look like some intelligent agent has been arranging affairs toward an intended goal.
Ooooooooooooh! The intelligent designer was directly involved in American history. No doubt, that included the Salem witch trials. This is amazing! Klinghoffer continues:
The question becomes: Toward exactly what intended goal? If a providential plan was behind so many events of the past, something that can’t necessarily be said of other nations (no offense!), why did the source of that plan, the intelligent designer, undertake this course of action?
Who knows? The intelligent designer — blessed be he! — works in mysterious ways. Let’s read on:
As with ID in the realm of biology, we’re naturally prompted to ask what our response to the design should be. What vision does recognizing the role of providence spark in us? What message are we intended to derive that could inform how we act and think?
So many profound questions! Your Curmudgeon has always assumed that much of American history was influenced by the Enlightenment, but the Discoveroids are Enemies of the Enlightenment. Can their cutting-edge science give us the answer? Here’s another excerpt:
Suggested in the interview, Mr. Medved’s answer presses upon contemporary political questions and of course could be debated.
Huh? That’s all Klinghoffer is going to tell us? Oh wait — there’s a bit more:
As always, he is charming, provocative, and deeply informed. The paring with Steve Meyer works very well, I think!
That’s so sweet! And now we come to the end:
It’s a very compelling 20-minute conversation, up now on the Great Minds with Michael Medved website. [Link omitted.] There’s an audio and a video version. If you appreciate the programing like this, please consider giving now to help keep it going! [Link omitted.]
So there you are, dear reader. Go ahead, click over there and watch the video. Then give the Discoveroids a contribution. And when you do, tell ’em the Curmudgeon sent ya.
