Creationist Wisdom #967: You Must Turn Back

Today’s letter-to-the-editor appears in The Daily Telegram of Adrian, Michigan. The title is Nation must turn back to God’s path, and the newspaper has a comments feature.

Because the writer isn’t a politician, preacher, or other public figure, we won’t embarrass or promote her by using her full name. Her first name is Margaret. Excerpts from her letter will be enhanced with our Curmudgeonly commentary, some bold font for emphasis, and occasional Curmudgeonly interjections that look [like this]. Here we go!

You know things are bad on the farm when it hits national news. The continual rains have played havoc with planting and many farmers have given up on getting crops into the ground. I’ve been on this farm 66 years and this is the first year that NOTHING was planted during May.

We all sympathize with Margaret. Then she says:

The fact is we are TOTALLY dependent on God – for everything! [Totally!] He sends the rain and sunshine, the cold and heat. For too long, we have gone our merry way, taking for granted His blessings and not even bothering to say ‘Thank you” to Him for all He does for us. [That’s terrible!] We call it a woman’s ‘choice’ to kill off her baby, when the Bible clearly tells us that babies are to be treasured, not trashed. “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord” Psalm 127:3.

We are truly horrible! After that, Margaret tells us:

We have declared our independence of Him by totally ignoring Him in public life. We kicked Him out of our school system a long time ago, teaching our children that they evolved from apes [Gasp!] and bemoan the fact now that shootings are commonplace in public schools across the nation.

That’s why there are so many school shootings! Margaret continues:

His Holy Name is mocked and used in vain on TV and there is no shame. Now there is a movement afoot to reconfigure sexual identification. [Oh no!] God clearly states in Genesis 1:27: “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him, male and female. He created them.”

What have we done! Let’s read on:

And how can any person with half a brain not see that God did, indeed, create humankind and our world? How could random evolution [Yuk!] possibly produce a male and female of every species of bird, insect and fish? And not only produce them, but make them capable of reproduction? THINK, people, THINK!!

Yeah, THINK! Another excerpt:

The fact is we are all totally dependent on Him for our life, our breath, our being. If God withdraws His hand of blessing on the USA, we are finished.

Ooooooooooooh! What can we do? Fortunately, Margaret tells us in her last paragraph:

It’s time we as Americans confessed our rebellion to the Almighty and turned back to Him in simple, trusting faith. He gives us the freedom to choose.

There you have it, dear reader, According to Margaret, if you don’t turn back to the old ways, we’re doomed! So whatcha gonna do?

  1. Turning our backs on him causes all these shootings. And it’s much worse in those other atheistic countries like Denmark and Sweden and Finland and Norway where because of low religious rates, there are these shootings all the time, even worse than here. Nobody goes to church in Britain anymore and look at all the carnage those atheists create. It’s a shame.

“How could random evolution possibly produce a male and female of every species of bird, insect and fish? And not only produce them, but make them capable of reproduction?”

Perhaps we should tell Margaret that some animal species are hermaphrodites and other are female only. Some fungi have far more than two sex. And, btw, it’s easier to produce viable offsprings when you have (at least) two sex.

Life is complicated, the biblical view is too simple to be true. And in the real world, abortions do not cause bad weather.

  3. I don’t want to get into a discussion of abortion, but I have to observe that Psalm 127:3 says, in the KJV (obviously, the emphasis is mine):
Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord …
Not babies. Moreover, the Hebrew says banim, which is literally sons. Whatever, it does not say fetuses..

We have declared our independence of Him by totally ignoring Him in public life. We kicked Him out of our school system a long time ago, teaching our children that they evolved from apes [Gasp!] and bemoan the fact now that shootings are commonplace in public schools across the nation.

Of course, real-life apes happen to be less violent than humans; they rarely kill one another. (On the other hand, bonobos, genetically our closest relatives, have lots of sex! The nasty brutes!)

  5. “The fact is we are TOTALLY dependent on God”
Then there is no need to plant indeed. It took Margie 66 years realize this?

“And how can any person with half a brain not see that God did, indeed, create humankind and our world?”
Well, I’ll just speak for myself, but apparently unlike Margie I try to use my entire brain (OK, this is a cheapo).

  6. Margaret….. Anti science. Anti gay. Anti knowledge. Anti family planning. Pro mysticism . Pro nationalism…Thinks that school shootings are unrelated to America’s 390 million firearms and lack of safety legislation….Behold the American heartland…What could possibly go wrong?

  7. GreenPoisonFrog

@eric lipps I’m sure that all that bonobo sex is between one man and one woman and that they are legally bound together in the sight of god as he intended, right?

  8. GreenPoisonFrog

@TomS God held all babies to be sacred except, for example, the ones he ordered dashed on the stones. (Ps 137:9). I’m afraid you don’t understand his magnificent plan.

“Any person with half a brain…” Margaret speaks more truly than she knows.

With Margaret, as an example of our true God Fearing, Salt of the Earth, Real MAGA America type, is there any reason to doubt why we are in the shape we are in? After all, she votes!!! Is there any doubt as to her political sensibilities? And we wonder why?

  11. Poor Margaret. God seems to be punishing her for perceived sins of others. Just not fair! Surely god could have spared the farm to allow planting by nudging a cloud or two.

  12. I’m not about to be bothered to open my copy of the KJB, so I’m not positive but the quote Margaret gives of Genesis 1:27 sure sounds as if the god she likes best is bisexual.

  13. Margaret’s half a brain statement appears to be 100% projection. Has she tried an anti-rain dance instead? Margaret also left out volcanos, which are obviously caused by sin.

  14. So agricultural and economic prosperity is ordained by Yahweh? Then he sure must adore the Chinese.

  15. @Draken
Proof texts like Psalm 127:3 cited by the letter writer tell us that the reward given by the Lord is to have many sons. See also the Book of Job.

  16. When people were entire dependent on the whims of the various gawds disease was *much* more rampant, people lived in fear in caves wherever possible, and living to an age of 40 years old was a relatively uncommon occurrence. Margaret is welcome to abandon all modern conveniences like electricity and fossil fuels, but I suspect that she hasn’t even started to think through the ramifications of what she claims.*

*Empty minded people always have this exact shortcoming, in addition to several others. They are also extremely fond of non sequiturs.

May I make a small point. Cave dwelling by humans was rather rare. See the Wikipedia article “Cave dweller”.
