Creationist Wisdom #981: Mass Shootings

Today’s letter-to-the-editor (it’s a column, actually) appears at the website Canada Free Press, located in Toronto. The title is Freed from God’s morality: The main reason we have mass shootings today, and they have a comments section.

Unless the letter-writer is a politician, preacher, or other public figure, we won’t embarrass or promote him by using his full name — but today we have an exception. It’s Charles Wills, one of their regular contributors. At the end of his column we’re told:

Charles Wills is a retired Engineer. Since retirement, he has devoted much of his free time to reading and researching world and biblical history. He enjoys reading and collecting old books, especially textbooks published before the turn of the 20th century, as well as writing about the wealth of information hidden in them.

We wrote about one of Charlie’s columns before — see #666: Barnum and Bailey. We’ll give you a few excerpts from his new column, with bold font added by us for emphasis, and occasional Curmudgeonly interjections that look [like this]. Here we go!

All the media outrage over the mass shootings is nothing more than an act. [Huh?] For Congress and the media, the shootings are just an excuse to pass more restrictive gun laws. If the people pushing the gun laws really cared about others, they would be outraged over the mass murder of helpless infants. They are not outraged by the mass murder of infants because there’s nothing to be gained by feigning outrage over it.

Observe that in the context of abortions, Charlie uses the word “infant” to describe what in many — perhaps most — cases, may be a few-week-old fetus. But abortion isn’t one of your Curmudgeon’s big issues, so we’re not going to play with it here — except to notice that Charlie equates it with the mass shooting of shoppers at a mall. It’s all the same to him. He says:

Moreover, it’s not the murder of innocents that upsets the media and politicians. They don’t care about the heartless murders carried out by abortionists everyday; they only care about taking our rights. In fact, the only way gun grabbers in Congress would express outrage over the murder of over a million infants is if they were shot with a gun. Heartless gun grabbers in Congress could then use the genocide as an excuse to attack the Second Amendment. Otherwise, it’s open season on infants.

Continuing his claim that the two activities are virtually identical, he tells us:

It’s okay with the media and Congress to cut up infants, vacuum them up, or snip their spines after they are born. They have no empathy for all the poor helpless infants being murdered every day, so how could they care about any of the victims of a mass shooter?

Then, finally, he takes a different approach:

In addition, back in the 1950s, 60s and 70s just about everybody owned a gun, and public shootings were unheard of. [Really?] Something happened that changed our culture, and I believe it has to do with the godlessness taught in public schools. Public schools destroy children’s faith by teaching evolution and banning the Holy Bible. As a result, far too many young people do not believe in God. In fact, far too many people can’t distinguish between right and wrong or good and evil. The line between good and evil has been blurred by Marxist academics.

Lets review what we were just told. Teaching evolution and keeping the bible out of public schools has destroyed morality — and it’s being done by Marxist academics. Okay, got it. Charlie continues:

Furthermore, morality is not a consideration for people who murder infants or carry out public shootings, and that’s because they are atheists. Sadly, many people today live irresponsible, hedonistic lives where pleasure comes before everything including morality. The truth of the matter is that godlessness caused the spread of hedonism, and hedonism caused the expansion of free sex, and that led to an explosion of unwanted pregnancies and mass abortions; the mass murder of helpless infants.

Wowie — now it’s godless hedonism that causes abortion and public shootings. Let’s read on:

In a nutshell, there’s nothing for non believers to look forward to except the pleasures of life. Since they don’t believe in God, they don’t believe there’s an afterlife, judgment or reward, so anything is game as long as it brings pleasure. Who do we have to thank for the atheistic, pleasure seeking mindset? We can thank government run schools for the mindset that believes there’s nothing wrong with murdering helpless infants or shooting innocent people for political purposes.

We’ll skip a bit — it’s all rather repetitive — and give you this from the end of Charlie’s column:

Finally, atheists, synonymous with godless communists, don’t want to believe in God because they don’t want to adhere to God’s laws or the morality that goes with it. That’s what evolution is about; freeing man from God’s morality. Why do we have mass shootings today? It’s because far too many people have been freed from God’s morality by the education system.

Okay, that’s enough. Charlie blames it all on the schools, and on evolution. He seems unaware that there have been mass killings throughout human history — long before the theory of evolution. Anyway, he has his opinions and you have yours — but you’re a hell-bound evolutionist, so your opinion doesn’t matter.

  1. Anybody can have an opinion.
One person can say that we should introduce socialized mandatory mental health care.
Another person could quote the Bible, about who lives by the sword.
But who is recommending that restrictions on research on firearm safety be removed, in the spirit of free speech? Maybe some facts would help?

Mein Gott, but Charlie is obsessed with aborted foetuses! Whenever there’s a mass shooting, the ‘vangies use it as a pretext to talk about unrelated issues.

And the concern over having their guns taken away: is that some form of sublimated castration fear?

  3. Michael Fugate

I am sure Charlie is advocating for conception days to replace birthdays and conception-right citizenship to replace birth-right citizenship. Also laws to prevent tourists from having sex while visiting the US. And all miscarriages to be investigated as potential homicides. No doubt he is hoping for the return of women as property as the Bible demands.

“The Invasion of the Marxist Evolutionist Guns-Grabbers Babies-Killers” would be a good title for a pulp movie.

  5. @Michael Fugate
And, of course, celebrating birthdays – rather than conception days – are the sneaky way that the atheist-Muslim-socialist-scientism conspiracy is taking over this Bible-based-gun-baring country.

  6. Although non-believers are totally unable to see it, the bible(s) clearly state that guns should never be taken away from believers and no laws should ever be passed to that effect. Even studying gun violence is not allowed by gawd.

  7. About Canada Free Press, a totally loony tunes organization:

  8. Charlie is very confused about the list of things he doesn’t like. But like many anti-abortion people he worries a lot about fetuses but once emerge from the vagina, he’s afraid gun-grabbers will keep them from being killed.

… and, if they are of the wrong ethnicity, the inn is filled, and they can’t fit in here.

  10. @zetopan
“Studying”? That is what secularist-scientistic-rationalistic do, rather than following the authority who tells you that he has all of the answers.

  11. “to except the pleasures of life”
Good to know that Charlie Not So Brown thinks shooting as many people as possible one of the pleasures of life. Apparently the only thing that prevents him from joining this fun is the prospect of an afterlife reward.

    “atheists, synonymous with godless communists”
    BWAHAHAHAHA!
I’d love to witness Charlie Not So Brown telling this an atheist nazi – man to man. I’ll make sure there is an ambulance ready.

  12. Charles Wills is absolutely correct: they should never have built a Pool Hall in River City…

  13. Charlie deserves a video.

Key line: Ich hab keine Pflicht.

“…hedonism caused the expansion of free sex…”

If only the government could find a way to tax all that free sex. Think of the revenue that could be generated, and ploughed back into the budget: even more spending on defence, for instance.

  15. If people who claim to hold the Bible in great esteem were to take seriously some extended passages about their political leadership.
In Deuteronomy 17, there are criteria that the Lord would apply to the choosing of the leaders, particularly about the king in verses 14-20. For example: Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
Proverbs has a lot of common sense advice about people. Chapters 26-29, from which I will pick out 29:2 – When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bearers rule, the people mourn.
And in the New Testament, 2 Peter 2
warns about future rulers. I’ll just point out some interesting verses from that chapter: 2, 3, 12, 14, 18, 19, but really the whole chapter.

  16. I’m sure Charlie would be entirely in favour of applying at least the same level of restrictions and procedures and expenses for purchasing a firearm as currently employed against those trying to obtain an evil abortion. Oh wait…

“For Congress and the media, the shootings are just an excuse to pass more restrictive gun laws.”

With all the restrictive gun laws we’ve been saddled with over the last 25 years, it’s amazing Congress has time to do anything else!

  20. The thing that always knocks me back when they talk about abortion in the wake of a mass shooting is that the only solution the teavangelicals have for abortion is to make it illegal, the very thing that they claim wouldn’t resolve the mass shooting problem.

  21. I notice that the prez is bragging about the reception that he got in vising the cities involved. Good thing that he is reminding us about what is important.

  22. I blame Charlie’s all-powerful god for not preventing these mass murders.

    Two can play this game.

  23. @Matt
To call it murder when God does it is to apply human standards to God.When God takes away yur property, it is not theft or robbery.
When God codemns you to an infnity of punshment for a finite sin, that is not injustice.
And when God makes the world, frm its beginning, havig the false impression whch we cannot detect, that is not lying. (Or when God writes the Bible with the false impression that it is the product of an Ancient Near Eastern cuture.)

  24. Richard Staller

Good thing that he is reminding us about what is important.

It could have been worse, he could have thrown paper towels out to the crowd of onlookers.

  25. Divine command theory, the identical reasoning used by Himmler to thank the SS for their extermination work in Poland.

  26. School shooting caused by godlessness?

  27. Mrs. Betty Bowers hasn’t considered that the population of UK+Sweden is far less than USA. Maybe we should add mainly godless Germany, Benelux and the rest of Scandinavia to get a better comparison?

  28. Michael Fugate

Isn’t it mostly caused by being male?

As long as there are restrictions on studying firearm safety, it is easy to make any statement about firearm safety, confident that there are no facts to prove it wrong.

  30. “so anything is game as long as it brings pleasure.” Please explain how this is bad? And YES! GUN! do kill people. Just how many would be killed if the killer had to do so by strangling them by hand? Up close and personal! Yes guns do make killing not only VERY easy but also done at a distance (beyond arms length) so you don’t have to work hard or see the death enter the eyes. There is no rational reason to own 10 assault weapons, or even one. 9mm pistol is bad enough for most killing.

  31. Michael Fugate

Maybe a new law that requires social security cards and driver’s licenses be replaced with guns with the numbers etched on and with your date of conception of course – to be carried at all times. New “Huggies with holsters” to accommodate from birth. No spare the rod anymore. What could go wrong? Guns in vending machines? I am pretty sure there were no murders when open carry was the norm.

  32. @TomS: “To call it murder when God does it is to apply human standards to God.”
Thanks for demonstrating that christian morals are subjective – ie depending on the subject holding those morals.

@Tildeb: “Divine command theory, the identical reasoning used by Himmler to thank the SS for their extermination work in Poland.”
At the Nürnberg trials leader of the Einsatzgruppe Paul Blöbel defended his “work” in Russia the same way as WL Craig the Canaanite genocide. As Dutch orthodox protestants were fierce resistance fighters during WW-2 you can imagine that WLC is not very popular in the Dutch Bible Belt.

  33. n a nutshell, there’s nothing for non believers to look forward to except the pleasures of life. So much idiocy, so little time. . . .

So let’s just take one of my pet peeves. In the passage cited above, when “Charlie” refers to “government-run schools,” he clearly seems to be referring to the federal government–which in fact does not run the public schools. Public education is run by municipal and/or state authorities everywhere in the country, although federal laws such as those barring racial discrimination do apply to them.

But perhaps that’s Charlie’s problem. Perhaps he’s pining for the good old days when “those people” could be kept out of the regular public school system. To be fair, that’s just a guess, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that it’s a correct one.
