Oklahoma’s 1st 2014 Creationism Bill — It’s Dead

Creationist bill, road kill

There are two creationist bills that were being considered in the current session of the Oklahoma legislature. We wrote about the first one here: Oklahoma Creationism: Josh Brecheen Again, and we are please to report that it has already met its demise.

The National Center for Science Education (NCSE) just posted this news: One down in Oklahoma. They say:

Oklahoma’s Senate Bill 1765 (PDF), which would, if enacted, have deprived administrators of the ability to prevent teachers from miseducating students about “scientific controversies,” died in the Senate Education Committee on February 24, 2014, when a deadline for senate bills to pass committee expired.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! That was this year’s very predictable bill from Senator Josh Brecheen – District 6. His official page at the Senate’s website indicates that his occupation is now Motivational Speaker (it used to be tractor salesman). Here’s his handsome picture:

Josh Brecheen

Observe the vacant stare and his silly, simple-minded grin. He looks like a creationist, doesn’t he? His bill was based on the anti-science, anti-evolution, pro-creationism Academic Freedom Act promoted by the Discoveroids — who are described in the Cast of Characters section of our Intro page. We’ve critiqued and proposed countermeasures to their model bill here: Curmudgeon’s Guide to “Academic Freedom” Laws.

But it’s not yet over in Oklahoma. This session of the legislature isn’t scheduled for adjournment until 30 May, and they have another creationism bill which is still very much alive. Josh is a sponsor of that one too — see Oklahoma’s Second Creationism Bill for 2014. So hang in there, Josh. Keep the faith!

  1. “Observe the vacant stare and his silly, simple-minded grin. He looks like a creationist, doesn’t he?”

His face says “creationist,” but his suit says “extra in a Jimmy Cagney movie, ya see?”

  2. Some of these guys remind me of Kenneth the page from “30 Rock.”

    Esp. David Barton.

  3. “He looks like a creationist, doesn’t he?”

Reminds me of the old Bill Hicks quote: “You ever notice how people who believe in Creationism look really unevolved? Big furry hands. Eyes close together. Big heavy brows. ‘I believe God created me in one day.’ Yeah, looks like he rushed it.”
