A Clam Proves Evolution Never Happened

This one popped up at the website of Answers in Genesis (AIG), the creationist ministry of Ken Ham (ol’ Hambo) — the ayatollah of Appalachia, the world’s holiest man who knows more about religion and science than everyone else. It’s titled Very Tiny Clam the Newest “Living Fossil”, and it was written by ol’ Hambo himself. Here are some excerpts, with bold font added by us for emphasis, and occasional Curmudgeonly interjections that look [like this]:

Imagine this [PhysOrg link]: it’s November 2018, and a scientist is carefully turning over rocks in rocky tidal pools full of cold ocean water along the Southern California coast. He’s looking for nudibranchs. But, rather than a colorful sea slug, he spots something very small and translucent stuck to a rock — it’s a bivalve (clam) he’s never seen before.

Very exciting. What happened next? Hambo says:

Fast forward four years and this scientist has a claim to fame as the discoverer of a new species. But it’s actually more interesting than that!

Why is it interesting? Hambo tells us:

The species this researcher discovered wasn’t really a new species. It had been observed and documented before . . . as a fossil. That’s right. A tiny clam, known only from the fossil record, turned up alive and well on a beach in Southern California!

Okay, the thing never went extinct. What can Hambo do with this? He continues:

That makes this clam a “living fossil,” a living creature that is virtually identical to its fossilized counterpart (there are many examples of such living things). [So what?] This is surprising in the evolutionary worldview that believes the fossil clams lived tens of thousands of years ago during the time of the La Brea Tar Pits, but it is not surprising in the biblical worldview.

Where is Hambo going with this? Let’s read on:

You see, when we apply the true history of the world to fossils, we understand that most fossils were formed just a few thousand years ago [Hambo’s bold font!], buried during the cataclysmic global flood.

Yup, that’s The Truth all right. But what is Hambo trying to tell us? Another excerpt:

The land animal kinds survived on the Ark and sea creatures, like the kind this micro-mollusk belongs to, survived in the waters outside the ark.

Yeah, yeah, so where’s the punch line? Here it comes, right at the end:

Since that was only about 4,350 years ago [Hee hee!], it’s not surprising that this kind survived and looks so similar to its fossilized counterparts. No evolution has occurred because evolution has never occurred.

Then why aren’t there living examples of every fossil — like the dinosaurs? Perhaps Hambo will explain that in his next blog article.

  1. We would expect Ham to apply his formula again, proving that there should be more clams than atoms in the entire universe.

  2. This suggests so many topics for discussion
    * the common notion as late as the 19th century that nothing created by God could go extinct
    * Thomas Jefferson’s belief that Lewis and Clark might find non-extinct megafauna
    * Tennyson’s poem “In Memoriam”
    * the tribolites

  3. Maybe God was looking through the fossil record and decided to just now re-create this particular clam again. That would explain why they were rediscovered only recently. Logic 101 folks.

  4. ” when we apply the true history of the world to fossils, we understand that most fossils were formed just a few thousand years ago ‘—-This could be true. Living fossils like Hambo and his Creos were only created a couple of thousand years ago.

  5. Speaking of which, When did the animals get stuck in the Tar Pits? Is it pre flood or post flood?

  6. Also, something from “10’s of thousands of years ago” is hardly a “living fossil”

  7. When I read the title of this thread, I first thought, “Which ‘clam’ of a genius at the DI did this?”

  8. Imagine this: a marine biologist wading through cold tidal pools on the California coast, pursuing knowledge, finding something unexpected, and writing up an accurate account of it, despite the fact that it does not fit preconceived ideas…

    Or rather, let Ken Ham imagine that, if he can. He’d have to use whatever imagination he has, for he has no referent for such an event and it would never happen to him. Scientists, on the other hand, don’t need to use imagination, for they know that stuff like that happens all the time, and they’ve almost certainly had similar experiences themselves.

  9. “I discussed this item on Monday on Answers News with cohosts Dr. Georgia Purdom and Bodie Hodge. Answers News is our weekly news program filmed live before a studio audience here at the Creation Museum and broadcast on my Facebook page and the Answers in Genesis Facebook page.”

    Wow! If I had a Facebook page, I could be famous too.
